I love the term "Skeomorph" in
this article -- there's an example in architecture mentioned in The Fountainhead. The main character points out in the fluted (?) columns in the Parthenon, the fluting was originally to hide the seams in the wood, but the columns were made of blocks of marble stacked on top of one another. There are skeomorphic terms associated with the telephone in American English (itself a skeomorphic term -- why not just "American"?), e.g., to "dial" a number, or "to hang up". Examples abound. There is a strong connection to the nature of memes and the theory of memetics, i.e., ideas that survive have to retain certain properties that make them "sticky" to the human mind.
