Mermaid Pals

On Art and Language

For me, it's more like Friedrich Nietzsche said about his writing, "It's the only way I've found of getting rid of my thoughts". My writing and drawing seem to provide that for me. I've only been able to "lose myself" in pottery (usually on the wheel). One of my teachers described one of my submissions as "OCD Pottery" since I made over a hundred pieces (many more than required, and I didn't display all of them), all of them exploring just a few themes (coffee cups and teapots, some with sculpture attached, various glaze styles -- glazes for me have been like Nietzsche, again, described "deep subjects", like a cold bath, quick in, quick out), repetitively, like a kind of therapy. Some people must think I love learning languages, but I think I really hate it, but it's an escape, and a much-needed one, apparently. I have several other personalities in each language I speak (and accent/dialect), and I can really BE that other person with a different vocabulary for thinking and speaking and relating to the world. Of course I get gaslighted and given a hard time about a number of other (organic) things -- probably a separate issue. But for me, art seems to be more about the distraction of being in the process and the "getting it over with" than the contemplation. I usually have the feeling of "Oh, did I make that?" when looking back on my art -- I honestly don't remember the content, certainly not the details, or even that I made it at all. I tend to find contemplative "truly passive existential experiences" (Slavoj Zizek et al?) to be deeply tragic for a number of reasons, some of which I probably can't express.

漫画 Horse in Hole

Again, Lisa Cleet, the squirrel, will be supplanted by Meganeko, the superhero cat, as the "wave" radical in all cases, the x-wave, the n-wave, etc.

Comic Doodles (Angry Birds)

This will be in a coming soon comic (addition to "Step Fourth").  It's kind of a parody of "Angry Birds" called "Pearls before Swine" and is played rather like bowling. Of course one is nude except for a doormat strapped across the front of one's body as one bowls giant pearls at the set of pigs at the end of the alley.

The creatures who hand out the ecoutrements (and snacks?) are of course, birds, and of course they're angry (or at least, surly).

漫画 50-Foot Woman Pipeline

русская шутка (Russian Joke)

Carrion, my wayward son...

漫画 Lisa Cleet, n-Wave

←Comic Index—This Whole Vignette

I think I will deprecate this character (from the coloring book) since she's really the same as Meganeko's curve, so no need for both. What do you think?

Memetic Index

I just noticed this stuff on the margins of a search I was doing and followed a bit.  I don't know what these are, but some interesting (memetic) questions arise.
On-line "Girl Games"....?
"Mermaid New Baby"...?
The mermaid one was under the "mom" category in the top line of first link....actually, no, I can't seem to find where it was.  Perhaps things shift a lot. There are popularity ratings on everything, which is probably a treasure trove of data.
Anyway, let's chat about this later. This could be an interesting example of some simple "ideas" cobbled together which appeal to a large, broad base of people. I expect that these are very Lego-like and that there is a not an enormous amount of "finesse" involved in putting these images together, e.g,, "Barbie", "Elsa", "mermaid", "pregnant", "be a mommy", "look pretty", "make-up", "princess", etc., and perhaps they may be jammed together any which way and still work.
This could shed some light on how to build memetic nexuses quickly and easily which are guaranteed to have a pre-determined impact based on the MIAOs they contain and the populations (cohorts) which are beholden to those MIAOs (one could probably say "inured of" in the sense I have been using hitherto).
This could lead to a cookbook approach to the Holy Grail of Marketing, as I have been terming it, and to self-promotion, and could also explain the issues I face and have faced in marketing So-Soo-Yoo, i.e., there are no pre-existing MIAOs to appeal to (at least not in this country -- Japan may be another story, since very young children flocking to play the game with the at-least-tacit support of parents seems to be commonplace there).
Build a toolbox of MIAOs, either from whole cloth (expensive!) or from the environment, either as-is or with modifications (preferably minor), and then simply attach them willy-nilly to one's own product or idea, and this automatically pulls in the concomitant cohorts, supply the "message" (new memes attached to the combination of memes) within the context of the new "game" (in this example) or "fuzzy fun toy" product, or other appealing and iconic presentation. The cohorts are drawn to the presentation because of the familiar MIAOs, and one's own message is thereby attached and begins bouncing around in the course of the cohorts' normal use of said MIAOs.  Once in the flow of the memetic system (memeplex), i.e., in the memetic fabric of the minds of members of the cohort, it begins to "snowball" and connect to other memeplexes, possibly attach to new MIAOs.
Anyway, that's the theory. I'll have to have a closer squiz at these games to see if they actually look like this. Hopefully I not get a computer virus in the process (or a memetic one, either (^>^) ).

Comic Doodles

模倣子 Some Thoughts on Branding

Displaying frap.jpg

It's a Frap!

So we see the progression from the name, to the prominent name around the image as the logo, to just the image, larger and larger. The image alone becomes the icon, and then it can be placed on things like clothing, toys for children who don't drink coffee, etc. and it makes sense, it works, because all literal references have been erased, even to the point that the image itself has become so abstracted that the original meaning of not only a mermaid, but a two-tailed (two-legged, with legs wide apart) "siren" who seduces and kills men is lost, replaced by a vague, brand-differentiated "special" mermaid, with only positive, if ill-defined, qualities, but most of all of the cultural "force" of the original.
The use of acronyms, such as IBM, FBI, IRS, KGB, GOP and so on serves a similar purpose. The letters are still there, but their meaning has long since been lost, for the most part, most people don't know what they even mean, and so they become mere placeholders for an abstract idea, the reality of which is free to vary and "float" from one individual mind to the next, giving it significantly more power.
