An earlier essay I wrote on this

Religions tend to tag their own media content as “canon” (is that where we get this?) or “apocryphal” and whether that’s determined by some Council of Nicæa or by some time-tested popular consensus may be academic (and I would put forward the macromemetic argument that at the end of the day it always comes down to the later). The heretics are either cast out or welcomed, sometimes grudgingly, into the fold (sometimes to be later cast out again). Mickey Mouse (and very few others) is The Pope, however well or poorly he execute his Holy Office, golly gee-whiz howdy heck Mouseketeers, and fan fic folks toil and meet in the catacombs for the most part to be ignored, but always in fear of the cleansing Holy Blade of his IP Legal Team’s axe. Same old story, different century. I often joke with friends who go to Bible Study, “I’d’a thought y’all’da learned it by now.” Same deal with nerd media folks, I reck—always another soothing trip through the stories, always more converts. When the Mouseketroopers kick my door in and drag me off for copyright infringement in my own comics, I figure I’ll have arrived.
