模倣子 Macromemetic Monday

Memetic Essays LIST - Manga Index

Introduction

Last time might have been a bit mathematical for some readers. I mentioned the three laws of macromemetics. Simply put, when an agent does something, other agents are given the opportunity to react, and their reactions create further opportunities, and so on. Agents try to make it so they have the most opportunities in the future, which includes the opportunities they try to afford to other agents.

The Three Laws of Macromemetics

1. An agent deploys memes in order to achieve optimal resonance
2. Deployment of a meme causes transition to a new state
3. The fabric mutates (1) when an agent, a meme, or a state is added, changed, or removed

In practice, memes are never deleted, they are only replaced by better memes and then allowed to atrophy (2).

Summary

The three laws of macromemetics describe how a memetic fabric functions and how it can change. They are simple, and they cover the subject pretty thoroughly. At this point we are rapidly approaching the idea of a special type of meme: the immunomeme. Memetic fabrics are conservative in nature, and this may be pretty obvious from the motivational systems of agents, that is, that they like to maximize their deployment opportunities. Memetic systems, memeplexes, evolve such that this becomes more and more the case.

We'll delve into this more in the coming episodes.
